02:52 pm - Write a letter to my congressman
I want to write a letter to my congressman. I don't know which one yet: you'll help decide that. But I want to make sure that I get a lot into it, and I want to do something fun.

So, what I would like to do is write a letter using LJ. You each get one sentence. Post it in the comments. If you see a thought you'd like to continue, reply to that comment to make a paragraph. I'll close it out in two days and send it to whomever the letter seems like it would most be appropriate to send to.

I'll also post any reply I receive.

So I'll start you all out with the first comment. Take it from there.

I'm writing you this letter to talk about some of the concerns my friends and I have regarding the direction our government is headed.

The fundamental duty of a government is to protect the liberties and lives of those legally within its borders.

However, it is also the duty of a government to see that its citizens do not trade freedom for safety. As ben Franklin said, he who does so deserves neither.

We live in a modern age, and as such we need a government fit for modern people, not one based on scare-tactics and empty threats.

We need a government that is prepared to admit mistakes, honor strengths, and take what it has learned from the past to build the future -- a future in which Americans need no longer fear the jeopardy of their civil rights.

As a tax-paying red blooded American citizen I feel that the time has come to take strong action in this matter if we are to set a strong example to the rest of the world.

your congressman

Maybe I'm too picky, but I believe your congress(wo)man is either Pryce or Tiberi. DeWine and Voinovich are Senators, not Congressmen, and the others represent districts other than yours.

According to my desk encyclopedia, Congress "consists of two houses, the Senate and the House of Representatives." Thus, both representatives and Senators are congresspeople.

Senators are traditionally supposed to be shown greater respect by giving them the more specific title.

con·gress·man
Pronunciation: 'kä[ng]-(g)r&s-m&n
Function: noun
: a member of a congress; especially : a member of the U.S. House of Representatives

The Representative for my zipcode (43202, 15th District) is Deborah Pryce. Unfortunately, the Disctricts are so jerrymandered that the people who voted Democrat in the Presidential election have a good chance of being outnumbered in a Congressional election.
