02:13 pm - Warning: Evolution might be involved!
I would approve of putting evolution warning stickers on text books if they looked like this:

Maybe it's time to make such stickers and distribute them to certain school boards. Any takers?

Warning: This school contains religious wackjobs who don't understand science. Religious wackjobs are neither useful nor interesting. These people should be approached as little as possible.

Print a few off and distribute them. It's a high-quality enough graphic for printing. :)

I agree! "Warning: the poetry contained in this book is scandalous!" "Warning: History is full of sex and death and drugs!" "Warning: Quantum mechanics is twisted and full of kinky ideas!"

You wouldn't even need to lie!

Gravity is a theory, not a fact, so why don't all these anti-evolution people go jump off a tall building? I mean, it's not a fact, so they might just fly.

Yes. I'm amused by that. It's a great misuse of the word "theory". In science, a theory is difference than something that works "in theory" but not "in practice".

And I agree that they should jump off buildings. It'll give them a good lesson in what kind of punch a theory can actually punch.

Wow. You have created a whole discussion just by giving your idea of a sticker. This is very interesting to read though...

I have to admit that this is one of my finer moments :)

Then again, I have some really awesome and thoughtful friends.

"neither law nor scientific theory"

Aren't there some states where creationism/ID is the law?

(Yeah, yeah, here I am bringing down the level of intelligent discourse in this thread.)

I don't know if any State has actually legislated it yet, but I might be misremembering and I wouldn't be surprised; I'd just be slightly saddened. Thankfully, even if they make it law in the sense we're talking about, they can't make it a natural law ... if those really exist.

Kansas banned the teaching of evolution at one point. So it was.

I must say it's nice to live in a country where there's no (official) argument like this. Then again, a lot of people just quietly assume the strangest of things. For example, one person my brother knows doesn't believe in gravity...

I think all schools should become the Roman Academy all over again. Logic, philosophy, togas (hee hee)... they may not have had it all right, but DAMN did they debate the hell out of it.

Well, I'd love to participate in this thorough pedagogical debate, but I've decide to study Chemistry, as I've heard it might be scandalous.

You know sensationalized molecular geometry can get sometimes... "Kids, what shape is THIS?"
