Football has the West Coast Offense. 'AA' hockey has the East Coast Hockey League. There's a Midwest Institute of Sexology.

The thing that America has always had is the wide open feeling. There's 3,537,441 square miles of room to stretch out in. This, of course, leads to the strange way we refer to things, as if their location makes things vastly different.

I say "as if," but really things are different on the west coast, in the south, and in New England. The ADF Groves show this in some very interesting ways. Even the Gate Opening, a standard among ADF Groves, varies from place to place, with different Groves using different hand-signs, energy-raising techniques, and chants.

That's really why festivals are so important to me: it creates a place were we can experience these things, learn about them, and get them done.

I'm slightly saddened that I can't make it out to Red Oak Grove's Fall Fest this weekend (If the link doesn't work, try later: ROG has the most unreliable server I've ever seen on the internet). I'd hoped I could make it, but things, as they will, came up, and I ended up being more broke this week than I ever have been before. Importantly, though: I'm not sure I'm ready for another festival today . . . I need some more time.

In other news, I'm going to be fixing the PSA Welcome Message for the Listserv, I think. It still notes that Jenica and Brian are the contacts for getting onto the list or solving problems.

I've decided that the list management is something I have to look further into. At the moment, I'm kinda stumbling blindly into it. It would be nice to maybe include something slightly more informative as a welcome message (not at all insinuating that rfunk did a poor job, but it is somewhat sanitized in some places). :)

So my lunch, today, will be spent pouring over the Listserv manuals trying to find out how to do this. (I admit, I get a bit of a thrill from learning things on my own.)

about those gates...

What do you think of Gatkeepers/gate opening? OK, that's broad. Do you think it is an integral or a peripheral part of ritual? Can the Kindreds not hear us if the Gates are closed? Is it a psychological thing rather more than a magical/spiritual thing?

We recently had two powerful experiences while experimenting with the whole Gate bit. One was a kick-ass, intense gate opening (stolen and adapted from Sonoran Sunrise Grove's-or what we saw at Trillium in Kirk's workshop) that we used at the beginning of ritual inplace of a Grove attunement.

And the second, we didn't bother with the Gates at all since our Matron is forever popping in on each of us. She doesn't knock, neither will we! That ritual was just as intense, centered, focused, wild and wooly as the other.

(is it a violation of LJ etiquette to write so much in someone's comment section?)

I think that, in ADF *group* ritual where you have a number of new people, it's integral.

But I talk to deity all the time without opening gates.

But I find them very magically/spiritually useful. Then again, I don't believe in psychology today.

Do you mean "Psychology Today" the magazine, or that you don't, on this day, believe in psychology?

When I read your second paragraph, it made me think of the Schoolhouse Rock cartoon, "Elbow Room". Heh.

I'll say "both" that first question.

I'm totally watching that Schoolhouse Rock video tonight.
