09:57 am - 1000, Joe Merchant, and a fingernail clipping
Random note: Only a magician would be this worried about a lost fingernail clipping.

On an even more random note: The entry on Salzberg was my 1,000th LJ entry.

Also:

I found Joe Merchant. I'd tell you what happened next, but that'd spoil the story.

Where Is Joe Merchant really is a great book. I was struck by how much it reminded me of the Illuminatus! Trilogy as I was reading yesterday. The book has pretty much everything you could dream of. Just to name a few of the things:

  • murder
  • sex
  • a woman with green eyes who walks back into Frank's life
  • romance and reality
  • Atlantis
  • UFO's
  • a woman who comes in contact with alien intelligence while screwing under a telescope
  • mystery
  • Alaska and Key West
  • a space ship named Cosmic Muffin
  • a rock star who couldn't take the life
  • a yellow journalist
  • a guy who finally did what we all want to do to jet ski's and Hollywood directors: blow them up
  • transmigration
  • pirates and pirate towns
  • Fidel Castro
  • an African warlord who's out for blood and a magic scepter
  • Hurricanes and sea squalls, and the Bermuda Triangle

And it's all prefectly believeable. At least, I can't say as it'd surprise me.

I think I'll go to Half Price Books today and try and locate Don't Stop the Carnival. I need to get a Norman Paperman fix. Then I'll have to get around to finishing A Salty Piece of Land. But now that I've finished with Frank Bama (with whom I found a good identification), I want to move onto Norman Paperman (with whom I've always had an identification since I first heard of him), and then back to Tully Mars (a hero of mine who turned me onto the only Catholic saint I have any devotion for, St. Barbara). I'm not sure if I'll like Norman or Tully better, but I imagine one of those two will be more. . . I dunno.

Happily ever after, now and then. . . indeed. Understanding that it of vital importance to me.

It's funny, but my longest vacation since I started work here has only left me wanting to be back at it. . . not at all rested and returned to work.

Naglfar is pretty far from my mind, actually. It helps to only believe in Norse deities when carving runes. Still working on them, btw.

More worried about the regular issues of sympathy and identification, I suppose.

Tough break on that bowl game. I like how everyone seems to be talking it up, even though the matchup is obviously one-sided.

Well, admiting that the god that coaches your team isn't actually coaching could be kinda hard, if indeed that is the case.

FSU shouldn't be playing Penn State. Honestly, I think it's insulting that an 8-4 team is playing a 11-1 team (or whatever Penn's record is). PSU damn well better win, though; I don't want to see another 2002 Iowa fiasco, where Iowa shared the title with OSU and then made us look bad by getting their asses kicked in some backwater bowl game. PSU is really in a lose-lose situation because the BCS gives out automatic bids that can look like that, though. I imagine they'll end up ranked below both us and Notre Dame, win or lose, because of it. . . unless they really sick it to FSU.

As for my addy, yeah, go scrape it out :)

And voodoo, right?

There's a nifty little song I'm listening to... refers to hair, but it's the same idea. Here's a clip for your enjoyment, since I know you can't get enough of lyrics! :D

"She won't make wigs of it --
She has more brutal plans!
Some she feeds to pigs,
Some she sells in distant lands
You wouldn't want to visit, is it
Strange that nude
Before a flat stone altar
She fashions crude and obscene figures
From your hair?"

Heh. Voodoo. One of the least likely forms of magic to work, in my reality, but one of the most amusing and fun to read and test out.

They sure know how to put on a show, those Voodoo priests! Not sure they're actually doing anything, but they can sure make you think they are!

I know! I am so impressed. I would like to go to a voudon rite very much.

Ironically, I myself have never really worked with it; my MOM happens to be the one who has a voodoo doll.

Go figure THAT one out!

The song also sounds a bit like it's about female 'witches' in general:

"Beware women who don't falter when they pick up scissors or a knife
Who know the names of poison plants, the purpose of each star,
The absolute anatomy of life..."

I thought, for a bit, to try it out, and see where it went. Then I realized that it's not a religion you pay half-assed attention to. Do it, or do nothing, I generally say. It doesn't really mesh with much else.

Besides, it's not something that belongs to me in any way, nor do I belong to it.

Just because I believe it's a bunch of hocus pocus doesn't mean I'm going to mess with it.

That last bit sounds like the Havamal:

"Shun a woman wise in magic,
Her bed and her embraces:"

the beauty about vodun (or if yer talking magic, then that is hoodoo, as vodun can be practiced without hoodoo), is that everyone thinks it isn't working >:)

interesting the st. barbara thing....i believe she is syncretized with Chango :)
