1. Where would you most like to visit that you haven't visited yet?

latexpussy's new house, in Thailand.

2. If you had to choose one of the world's "mainstream religions" to practice, which one would you pick?

Catholicism. Hands down.

3. Did we freak out your brother, that one time, when we met you and him and your mum for lunch?

Dunno. I don't *think* so, but you'd have to ask red_sput yourself. If he reads this, I hope he comments :)

4. At this exact moment in time, how many people do you love?

To count them would be impossible. But I would commonly name five women, as well as my family. There is also my Grove, each of whom I love in their own way. There are old friends, male and female. There are members across ADF, and there are some people I work with. As I noted in the other entry, love and lust do not necessarily require one another, though there is very little lust where there is no love.

However, I admit that in general, I would point to those five women and my family as people I would most commonly use the word "love" with, and I'll use it freely with them. For others, I wouldn't generally use it for various reasons.

5. You told latexpussy that sex was not that big of a concern for you with regards to dating. Could you envision yourself having a completely non-physical relationship with someone who you meshed with very well intellectually (assuming your relationship also did not allow you to have other partners)?

Oh, hell yeah. I think I might actually prefer one in some circumstances. You know, not knockin' sex or nothin'. . . :) But my relationships have never revolved around it, nor has it been something that I have found important in them. The way I veiw sexuality in relationships is complicated, though. It's a way to get closer, but it's not the only way, nor is it the ultimate way.

6. What is the least cool hobby you have?

Collecting state quarters for my ex-girlfriend

7. Do you dislike dogs?

No, I dislike having to come home every 4-6 hours to walk them :) I actually love dogs. I do believe that there's a picture of me with a certain dingo floating around the 'net. . . I'm sure someone will be so kind as to post it.

8. What's the best thing a friend has done for you in the last month or so?

Made me realize, entirely unintentionally, that I was over Tina.

9. Have you ever avoided reading a book that you were supposed to read for class, a book club, ADF, or suchlike, and then acted as if you had actually read it (discussed it, reviewed it, wrote a paper on it, taught it, etc.)? If so, what book?

Wuthering Hights. Totally. And once I did that, I've done more: my library is full of books I just haven't had time to read.

10. What was the last movie you saw? Was it any good?

The Davinci Code. Actually, I'm about to go out and see it. I'll update when I get home with an actual note as to whether it was any good or not :)

11. Do you consider the town you currently live in to be your "home town"?

Yes, I do. But it's not my only one :)

12. What do you consider to be your best physical attribute?

druidkirk appears to be very fond of my ass, and Tina always liked my legs. Me, I always liked my grin best.

13. If you suddenly were forced to stop doing the whole ADF thing, what would you do with all your free time?

Get a second full time job? Maybe go out and actually ask a girl out? Learn to sing?

Yeah, I'd probably just get a second full time job. I spend enough time on ADF to do that.

14. Is there a point that you can imagine at which you would say to yourself, "Okay, MJD, you've completed everything you were meant to do or really wanted to do on this earth, now you can die happy."? If so, what would you have just done before making that statement?

Yes. I have this feeling that if my time was right now, I wouldn't have any real regrets. The only thing I'd really like to do is copy all the documents I've written onto DVD's, send one to the ADF Office, hand one off to tesinth, and hand one off to my parents.

15. Thoth, or Rider-Waite?

Waite. Totally. (Strangely, I had the exact same thought when I saw this on latexpussy's LJ)

1. Which trip that I have either dropped your off at the airport or picked you up has been the worst? (I wanted to ask best-worst, but since it's limited to one question...)

The actual travel portion of Walking With Fire was probably the worst, even though the festival made up for it in spades while we were actually there. Still the best festival ever, despite where I ended up being stuck.

2. How has your academic study of religion changed the way(s) you view your own religion(s)? (I know, a novel unto itself)

It's shown me that Neo-Pagans only read theorists that agree with them, which has driven me to look much, much harder at my own motivations. I generally think that this is for the best.

3. Mama or Daddy's boy?

Hell if I know. A little from column A, a little from column B.

4. Does a person have the *one* love of their life, or is it a much more open arena?

It's more open. Then again, I have to believe that: if not, I'm shot in terms of finding another love. . . But no, I know that I can love as deeply, if not more, than I did with Tina.

5. Yeah, nothing I particularly want to know about ya in this area (and I'm sure its vice-versa).

Deal. :)

6. How's come we've never hiked?

I threw rocks at your window one morning. We've just never planned it since then. What are you doing the third weekend in June?

7. When the hell are you going to say "enough cats!!!!!!!!!!!"?

I said that with Raven, 5 years ago!

8. How old is your oldest friendship, i.e., do you still consider people in high-school to be your friends (meaning you talk/communicate with them at least once every couple months)?

I talk to one person from high school in Chicago, about once per year. I recently found one friend, whitmanschild, on LJ. I've known him since. . . maybe 4th grade? Hard to recall. My oldest friend is probably Kori, though. I don't know how long I've known her, but the frequency of contact is difficult to gauge.

9. When the hell is Ziiace's text gonna get written???

I wish I could tell you. Maybe when the Cemnaxes get off their asses.

10. What's the best worst movie you love?

Geez, there are sooooo many!

I have to go with I Sailed to Tahiti With an All-Girl Crew though. Just gotta.

11. Where do you say you're "from"?

Depends on context. If someone here asks, I'm from Chicago. If someone asks when I'm traveling, I'm from Columbus. I was riased in Kentucky, but I'm not from there.

12. Why do you get all the chicks when you've got hair like that?? :P

Shit if I know, man. I hear there's been discussion about whether I have a toupe. . .

13. What's one charitable/volunteer organization that you dispise?

Earth Liberation Front. They're chasing the wrong demons.

14. How close are ya?

I've never set goals for myself in terms of the whole. I prefer just to be who I am, and I'm already that. I don't like saying it much, but I'm really happy where I am, and wouldn't be sad dropping off the face of the world tonight.

15. Where do you see yourself in it?

At the center, of course. That's where someone who finds orientation within themselves always exists. :)

1. Where do you hope you are when you pass away?

My favourite answer to that has always been, "High on cocaine under an 18 year old girl," but it's really not for me, not really. I'd rather be with friends, wherever the are, or away from everyone on the trail. Both are equally appealing.

2. Define Peace

Internal: Orientation and religious experience.

External: The state of having the ability to beat up everyone else, but not using it nor even wanting to use it.

3. Have you ever dreamed of being a part of a huge Amish family?

Can't say as I have. Though I have always wanted to help raise a barn.

4. Does love of another individual surpass death?

Yes.

5. If you could only have one and never the other....would you choose sex or love?

Love, hands down.

6. If money was no problem, what would you chose to do in life to pass the time?

I'd write. All the time. And read, so that I could write more informed.

7. I have 17 cats. If you came to my house for Yule, what would you bring them as gifts?

Catnip, rabbitfur mice, and FrontLine.

8. Have you ever cried deep within your soul in pain for a friend?

Yes.

9. If you could be a character in any book you have ever read....who would it be and why?

Norman Paperman. I've already mentioned it, honestly, but I haven't mentioned it for sure before you came onboard my LJ.

10. Name a movie that disgusted you

The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover. But it also fascinates me.

11. What is the smallest town you have ever lived in?

Owensboro, KY. Population, about 50,000.

12. You are a handsome man. Thinking in terms of your appearance, if you had to allow someone to remove one part of your body from your neck up, what body part would you choose?

1) Thanks :) 2) My hair is my first thought. I don't care much for it, really, it's just something there.

If you're thinking of something more permanent, then I'd say an ear. The damn things are near useless anyway.

13. Have you ever done volunteer work anonymously with no recognition for your work at all?

Yes. But I think that telling about it would be problematic :)

14. If your last breath were this day, what regret would you have on your mind? If death does not come.....will you try to achieve it?

Probably that I never managed to hike the AT. I pray that I don't have to wait until my dying breath to get to it :)

15. Can you hear her crying?

I hear her laughing, and I think that the more of us who hear that, the more likely we are to protect her.

These are not pictures of the weird rite we did today!

Oh well, this could be fun. If I can actually think of questions. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

1. Name a place, if there is one, where you would never, ever go.

2. What do you do / how do you work with Agni?

3. Why do you never go home for the holidays?

4. What is your favourite method of expressing love?

5. What's your favourite part of the female body to touch?

6. When will you admit that you secretly love square dancing and want to take it with me? :D

7. What do you do when/if one of your pets dies? (I didn't mean that to be morbid... er...)

8. At what point do you know that a person is now your friend?

9. Have you ever read the Count of Monte Cristo?

10. Has a movie ever made you want to cry before? If so, which?

11. What would your ideal home-town be like?

12. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to a foot shorter than you are?

13. Are you going to volunteer at High Banks?

14. How long are you content to work at Baker? Are you hoping for a more satisfying and better-paying job someday, or is it satisfying?

15. Name the geographical climate (desert, mountains, ocean, bayou, tundra, etc, etc, etc) that you would most like to visit.

1. Name a place, if there is one, where you would never, ever go.

CDG. I imagine it's unaviodable to have a return trip, though.

2. What do you do / how do you work with Agni?

Generally speaking, I don't. Children who play with fire get burned. And I am nothing if not a child.

3. Why do you never go home for the holidays?

I need those vacation hours for festivals. And someone put Wellspring on Memorial Day, which bites, and then Summerset ends up on Labor Day. Stupid festival planners.

4. What is your favourite method of expressing love?

Small things. Things that don't say "love" outright, but when added together, do.

5. What's your favourite part of the female body to touch?

That crease, between where the thigh meets the hip. It's always been my favourite.

6. When will you admit that you secretly love square dancing and want to take it with me? :D

I will never admit to that! Never!

7. What do you do when/if one of your pets dies? (I didn't mean that to be morbid... er...)

See the answer here.

8. At what point do you know that a person is now your friend?

It's exactly like realizing you're in love with someone. At some point, you just know.

9. Have you ever read the Count of Monte Cristo?

No, but it's on the list.

10. Has a movie ever made you want to cry before? If so, which?

I say "Yes", but I cannot remember what movies they have been. But I have not cried since my grandfather died, so as far as I know, I have never cried at a movie.

11. What would your ideal home-town be like?

Like it is now, I imagine.

12. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to a foot shorter than you are?

It'd be like seeing the world from your angle.

I wouldn't be happy with being 5'4" with shoes on, personally. I hear that girls don't like short guys, for one, and for another, I hear that short guys have complexes about being short.

13. Are you going to volunteer at High Banks?

That's the plan, but I can't until the festival season gives me a free weekend or three to line something up, like to actually go in.

14. How long are you content to work at Baker? Are you hoping for a more satisfying and better-paying job someday, or is it satisfying?

I am always looking for a better-paying job, and I'm not necessarily looking for one close to home. I've sent out resumes in the past to some strange places. The compensation has never been worth losing the educational benefits of OSU, though. Those are what tie me to this job, the most.

15. Name the geographical climate (desert, mountains, ocean, bayou, tundra, etc, etc, etc) that you would most like to visit.

Mountains. Gimme them mountains.

Your comments are getting long, I better get in while I get a chance. I guess I asked more than one question for a few, but they may be related.

1. What place have you yet to go that you want to go the most? When will be the next time you take a long trip for a reason other than a festival? When are you coming to Seattle?:-)
2. How do you think our first religious experiences at Zion as an initial foundational path effect your road to discover your true faith? If we had grown up in a Pagan church do you think your views on life or religion would be any different?
3. How would you rate the communication among our extended family?:-p Is there any particular member outside of mom, dad, and me that you feel closer to? If we had to have another sibling would you rather they be older than you, younger than me, in the middle, boy or girl?
4. What do you cherish most about love?
5. Do you feel sex before marriage is required to know truly for sure if you really want to be with that person?
6. Outside of anything to do with the outdoors or religion, what would you consider your favorite indoor hobby?
7. What was your favorite turtle of the ones you caught growing up. Runty, One of the Many Speedys, Tutti-Fruti, or No-Name. Do you prefer the turtles to the cats?
8. How long would you have to know someone and what would have to happen between you before you would consider them as a very close friend?
9. What was the most memorable book you read from the AP History courses in high school? What was the most influential book you read as you were making your path to druidism?
10. What was the most influential movie you saw as a kid? What was your favorite in the last 10 years?
11. Would you have preferred to have lived in one home town our entire childhood? Do you think the moves were good for getting new experiences and meeting different kinds of people, or does it give you more of a sense of home town identity crisis?
12. How can we look so similar, but you get so many more women:-p? Which physical feature which you are unable to change bothers you the most? Which do you like the most?
13. What do you think was the best, most helpful volunteer project you ever were a part of?
14. What is your biggest career goal? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
15. Has your world view changed considerably in the last 10 years? What caused any changes to your views?

Tricksy, how you keep asking more than one question :)

1. What place have you yet to go that you want to go the most? When will be the next time you take a long trip for a reason other than a festival? When are you coming to Seattle?:-)

Chatres, Rome, and Olympus are all on that list. I'm planning to go to Kansas around July 4 at the moment and do some work. I hope to get to Seattle in the near future, hopefully before September, but I'm not sure about that.

2. How do you think our first religious experiences at Zion as an initial foundational path effect your road to discover your true faith? If we had grown up in a Pagan church do you think your views on life or religion would be any different?

When I hear "religious experiences", I think of the actual term as applied by religious studies scholars, so my answer is pretty simple: there were no religious experiences, which is why I didn't feel weird about leaving. I suppose most correctly, it gave me something to compare later experiences to. And so any inkling of feeling "religious" was something I latched onto and followed until that feeling dried up or got explained away.

My views on life and religion would have been radically different had I been raised Pagan. I'm not sure I'd be nearly as good a person if I had not had the upbringing I did. I also think I probably would have fallen into the trap of Christian-bashing that so many Pagans fall into, where they define themselves primarily as "not Christian" rather than as Pagan. There's a lot about me that I know comes from being raised in the UCC that I wouldn't change for anything.

3. How would you rate the communication among our extended family?:-p Is there any particular member outside of mom, dad, and me that you feel closer to? If we had to have another sibling would you rather they be older than you, younger than me, in the middle, boy or girl?

Poor :) At least, trickle-down is the only method of communication I really get. Mom seems intimately connected with so many people, but me, I rarely hear from any of them.

As for other siblings, I'd definitely want one younger than you. I like being oldest (going through a lot of things first helped immensely), and I'd hate to have someone who could beat up on me like I did to you. . . *weak grin*

4. What do you cherish most about love?

The fact that it doesn't really require nurturing to grow. It often just happens.

5. Do you feel sex before marriage is required to know truly for sure if you really want to be with that person?

I don't even think sex during marriage is required, but then, I'm weird :) But no, I've been positive about that without sex ever entering the equation before, and it'll happen agian.

6. Outside of anything to do with the outdoors or religion, what would you consider your favorite indoor hobby?

Trying to beat the Legend of Zelda without a sword. I still think it can be done, though it appears that passing level 4 is problematic. But I have one last thing I can try.

7. What was your favorite turtle of the ones you caught growing up. Runty, One of the Many Speedys, Tutti-Fruti, or No-Name. Do you prefer the turtles to the cats?

Tutti was my favourite, I think. We had her/him the longest. But the only one I have a picture of is one of the Speedy's.

8. How long would you have to know someone and what would have to happen between you before you would consider them as a very close friend?

The world record is held by erienc, who became one of my closest friends in about 30 minutes. The time varies with people, though, and most of my friends are women. Guys have a hard time becoming close friends with me.

1. If you had to go somewhere for two weeks where you don't know the language and knew that you wouldn't run into anyone that you shared a common language with...where would you chose to spend fourteen days miscommunicating?

It's hard to find a place where I know I won't find someone who speaks English. I think I'd probably seek somewhere in eastern Asia, near Mongolia.

2. what was your first experience of god/gods/the divine...however you want to call it?

The first one I recall, and they say you never forget your first, was when I was at a camp and had been working all day doing service, silently. That night, I saw a faun, a lost lonely dear fawn that called to me. I've explained it better elsewhere, but I'll have to dig for the link. That was my junior year in high school.

3. What weird quirks or habits did you get from your family?

I, honestly, do not know of any that definitely came from family. Most of my habits that they taught me are pretty normal.

4. if you were to give the world a piece of advice about love, what would it be?

Damn the torpedos.

5. what is the one band/song/type of music, that if it happened to come on the radio...no matter how great things were going otherwise would just kill it then and there?

There's no song that I know of that woud do that, I don't think. I assocaite songs with happiness and beauty.

6. what one hobby would you like to take up that, for any reason is not possible for you to do so right now?

Flying.

7. if you could domesticate one of any wild animal for a pet, what animal would you choose?

A squirrel for mistw02

8. what's the strangest or craziest thing you've done for a friend?

In the context of doing things for friends, nothing really seems "strange". As for "crazy," though, I did once catch a $39 flight to Chicago to eat at Portillos and then catch one back same day to take a test. The friend just wanted to take me out.

9. are there any books that you wish you'd never read?

Wuthering Hights. But I only read half anyway :)

10. foreign films: dubbed or subtitled?

Subtitled, of course.

11. what is the one thing in your home town, if removed or changed, would cause you to be the most heartbroken, devastated or at the very least, bummed out?

My Grove. Not so much changed, because change I can deal with, but I love my Grove, and it is one of two things that keeps me tied to Columbus.

12. Ummmmm...I don't know...ummmmm...if you had to completely change your appearance and could only keep one thing the same, what would it be?

My eyes. I like 'em, even if they don't work perfectly.

13. Assume that the basics are covered- food, clothing, shelter. If you had to devote your life to working for a single volunteer cause (outside of ADF) what would you do?

Trail maintenance on the AT.

14. if y=cotton candy what is your biggest, grandest...most frivolous goal? Solve for y.

I don't technically need to solve for y, as y has already been defined. But I see where you're going.

(((y+s)f * (i/p)) / (d-r))h = g

y = cotton candy (eaten/obtained, I presume)
s = # of sunny days
f = # of fairs/festivals/etc. attended in a year
i = intent
p = probability
d = detractors
r = friends
h = happiness
g = goal

15. when you get right down to it, how much does the origin of the world matter?

Nada. I mean, what the hell are you going to do about it?

1. Where's your favorite place you've traveled as a part of ADF and why?

Austria, hands down. I wish more people could have gone. It was simply amazing.

2. Religion - What's the defining point of religion for you (in other words, why are you religious)?

Because it is right. There's no other way to explain it.

3. Family - Is your brother still going to Greece?

I hope so. I think he'd really like it. red_sput, what do you think?

4. Love - What is love (not necessarily in the romantic sense)?

It is nothing uncommon.

Unless you do it right.

5. Sex - If you never had sex again, what would you miss the most?

I'm not sure I'm able to answer that question with authority.

6. Hobbies - What hobby do you most miss when you're bogged down with work?

ADF, I think.

7. Pets - How's the princessy cat behaving these days?

Still a brat, but a brat I love. :)

8. Friendship - For someone to be your friend, what characteristics do they need to have?

There's no set criteria. I'm very flexible about my friends.

9. Literature - What's a book that everyone should read, IYHO?

The Principia Discordia, or How I Found the Goddess and What I Did to Her When I Found Her.

10. Movies - What's the best movie you've seen in the last 12 months (in or out of the theater)?

I honestly could not tell you. Movies are, in my mind, mostly forgettable experiences.

11. Home town - Where do you consider home, and why?

Columbus, OH. It's where I've been for nearly a decade, and it's where most of my friends are. My job and the house I own are here. I'm content.

12. Physical Appearance - What do you especially like about your appearance?

Not as much as it appears I like. :) Seriously, I like a lot of things about the way I look, but I could always do better.

13. Volunteer Work - What sort of volunteer work do you especially dislike doing, but you'd still do it because of It's Being The Right Thing To Do?

I dislike talking to people and calling them on the phone, but if there's a feeling of things being the Right ThingTM then I'll do it anyway.

14. Life Goals - Where do you see yourself professionally and personally in ten years?

I generally don't. This question was kind answered above, but I don't plan like that for the future, with goals and such. I just have ideas of what would be nice.

15. The World - If you were the earth, would you give people spankings for polluting?

She already does. They're just things like hurricanes and earthquakes and volcanos. (Which, I should stress, does not indicate that I think that the people on the receiving end of those "deserve" them in any way. But I do think that nature reacts to us.)

haha. You don't have to answer mine if you don't want to, it seems you have a lot of other ones to answer as well!

1.What is the most life changing experience that you’ve had while traveling? I’m talking about having feelings of wonder and awe, not like…breaking your leg while traversing the Pyramids.
2.You seem to me to be the type of person who generally follows rules. Which rules are more important, the rules with regard to your religion, or the law of the land? IE: What would you do if they contradicted each other, and which one has more sway over your actions?
3.Tell me one family dish that your Mom, and only your Mom (or whoever else does the cooking in your parent’s house), can make to your satisfaction.
4.If a law were passed in the United States that all marriages had to be arranged by one’s parents, would you marry or choose to remain single (or, really, do you believe love is spontaneous, or something that can be created?)?
5.Sex is overrated: True/False.
6.Tell me one hobby you have that has absolutely no merit whatsoever in terms of helping you to grow as a person. A just-for-fun time wasting hobby.
7.Do you use the cutesy baby voice when you talk to your pets? If no, tell me one weird thing that you say to your pets that you would never say if someone could hear you.
8.Have you ever exchanged tokens of friendship with someone (i.e.: Something that you both wear/carry in honor of your friendship)?
9.Have you ever identified with a character in a novel to the extent that you sometimes wonder what that specific character would do in any given situation? If so, what novel and character?
10.Is there a film that you watch that always has the ability to make you happy no matter what? What film?
11.Do you believe home is a place on the map, or do you believe that it has more to do with your proximity to the people you love?
12.Be totally honest: Is there any physical feature you have that you dislike, and if you could have plastic surgery to change it and have no one realize what happened, would you do it? (you don’t have to say the feature, just yes/no)
13.Have you ever been forced to do volunteer work (for school or otherwise) and didn’t feel good about doing it on the principle that it wasn’t technically “volunteer” work, because you didn’t actually do it of your own accord?
14.Do you feel that someone has to have goals in life in order to be happy and successful? Why or why not?
15.Who/What made the World?

1. What is the most life changing experience that you’ve had while traveling? I’m talking about having feelings of wonder and awe, not like breaking your leg while traversing the Pyramids.

Finding out that everywhere else was really just like America, but with different languages. It really reminds you that humans are all in this together, and the thing we have most to lose is each other.

2. You seem to me to be the type of person who generally follows rules. Which rules are more important, the rules with regard to your religion, or the law of the land? IE: What would you do if they contradicted each other, and which one has more sway over your actions?

Speaking most honestly, there is really only one rule in my life: Amusement. If I follow rules, it is because they amuse me. If I break them, it is in persuit of that amusement. In the game I play, that is the central, determining factor of whether something is in the "rules" or not. Does it amuse me or others?

3. Tell me one family dish that your Mom, and only your Mom (or whoever else does the cooking in your parent’s house), can make to your satisfaction.

Pancakes. The recipie comes from the back of a box of bisquick, but it cannot be duplicated.

4. If a law were passed in the United States that all marriages had to be arranged by one’s parents, would you marry or choose to remain single (or, really, do you believe love is spontaneous, or something that can be created?)?

I dunno. I guess it would depend on what my parent's taste was in women. . .

As for love, yes, it's spontaneous. But I think that, like mystical experience which can also not be created, certain factors can make it more likely to occur.

5. Sex is overrated: True/False.

I don't believe I'm qualified to give a black/white answer to that, unfortunately. I'd say that it probably can be overrated, but I don't think it necessarily is. I would say that the truest answer to that question would depend on your partner and what is important to you about sex.

6. Tell me one hobby you have that has absolutely no merit whatsoever in terms of helping you to grow as a person. A just-for-fun time wasting hobby.

Sleeping in my hammock. Though, honestly, I think that also helps me grow to some extent :)

7. Do you use the cutesy baby voice when you talk to your pets? If no, tell me one weird thing that you say to your pets that you would never say if someone could hear you.

I do not, generally, though my voice does change, as does the way I word things. Most likely, the things I'd say to my pets only if no one could hear me are things like, "I love you, I missed you, and I'm just happy to be with you." Those are things between me and the boys and girl.

8. Have you ever exchanged tokens of friendship with someone (i.e.: Something that you both wear/carry in honor of your friendship)?

I have. I carry a number of things one person in particular has given me. I don't exactly know why, but probably because they keep me in touch with her, and they keep me from missing her too badly.

9. Have you ever identified with a character in a novel to the extent that you sometimes wonder what that specific character would do in any given situation? If so, what novel and character?

I have. Norman Paperman from Don't Stop the Carnival.

15. when you get right down to it, how much does the origin of the world matter?

Nada. I mean, what the hell are you going to do about it?

Perhaps the best answer to this question ever. :D
--------------------------

1. Travel -- Do you think that the understanding of the foundational sameness of humanity in spite of cultural and linguistic decoration that you've acquired via your global traveling can be communicated to any large degree to someone who hasn't been abroad? What do you see as a primary obstacle to sharing those experiences with someone else?

2. Religion -- Like you, although I don't follow the spiritual path or religious practices of my parents, I don't regret being raised in a Christian church, and similarly value the perspective that upbringing lends me. What element of the Christianity you were raised in do you find most analogous to something in your current spiritual practice, and is there anything from that old Christianity that you wish you could bring to your Pagan traditions, but find incompatible?

3. Family -- Is there a point in your friendships with people where it is possible for someone to BECOME you family (short of marriage), or do you hold these things as two fundamentally seperate entities (via blood- and law-authority)?

4. Love -- In plenty of other languages, there are many different degrees and types of feeling that we lump together as "love" in English. If you were to create new words to replace that one word in English that would immediately be adopted and used by everyone, how many would you make and how would they be used?

5. Sex -- You've commented that sex isn't a necessary thing for your life, and in some cases, the lack of it looks pretty desireable. I, on the other hand, am pretty much the opposite on that score. Do you think the energies that would normally be reserved for your libido get channelled into other parts of your personality, and if so, where does all that drive go?

6. Hobbies -- What hobbies did you have as a child, but no longer participate in?

7. Pets -- When you talk to them, do you talk to your cats primarily in English or in cat-speak?

8. Friendship -- Have you ever had your friendship betrayed in a major fashion? If so, by whom and how?

9. Literature -- So we've established that you hated Wuthering Heights. That aside, if you had to choose one character from that novel to have dinner and conversation with, who would it be? Where/what would you eat and what would you talk about?

10. Movies -- What was the last movie you saw that you thought to yourself, "Man, I wish I could have those two hours of my life back," or something similar?

11. Home town -- In the descriptions of all of your moving around, you've referred to Owensboro as a hell of sorts. What were the top three things that made you hate Owensboro so much?

12. Physical Appearance -- What point of physical hygiene are you the most fanatical about, and which the most lax?

13. Volunteer Work -- Have you had a volunteer experience that you later regretted, even partially?

14. Life Goals -- I don't really set very many long-term goals for myself other than general happiness, and you've said similar things. Hypothetically, though, what one goal would you set for yourself if you knew with absolute certainty that you could and would achieve it before you die?

15. The World -- Assuming that all places are possible, where in the world would you like your physical remains to be put when you die?
-----------

As for my questions, you can leave them on my journal so that you don't have to make your comment page any longer...

I don't know. I think that the primary obstacle would be that people can't see past that language barrier. It's a conceptual barrier. There's also the fact that people are becoming more and more afraid of the world outside: Americans fear being kidnapped when they go abroad, or becoming targets. They think that every person in France hates our guts because France won't support our war with Iraq (and let's not talk about those dirty Muslims who are just being ungrateful!). Our perception seems to be warped in a lot of frightening ways.

Adoration. I was raised in a religion where God was not vengeful or angry. He was loving and wonderful. He created us because he loved us, and any sort of "tough love" we got was presented like a kid who brought home a bad report card: we were spanked out of love so that we'd do better, not in punishment because we'd done poorly.

The way I see my deities is similar, really. I adore them and they love me. They don't lash out in vengance or anger. Sure, they test me, but it's to develop the best in me, to bring out things that I don't even know that I have. They continually make me stronger, more able to help those around me. I never heard a "fire and brimstone" service until we started testing out churches in Chicago, where I saw my first message of hate from the pulpit. There was some sort of "morality play" in the service, where a woman was shown the consequences of abortion. We never returned.

Most recently, I went to a local church, and I found that I was in the same sort of company as the church I grew up in, and it felt really good to be there. I felt that people there adored their God. They weren't afraid of Him. And that made me feel good.

I'm not sure that there's anything that I really liked that I have ever considered "incompatible". I thought that maybe the concept of having a single deity might be, when I first read this question, but then I realized that not only have I never had any issue deciding who to address a prayer to, but I also sometimes work in a monotheistic paradigm: There is no Goddess but Goddess, and Her name is Eris. I don't find any disconnect with my usual polytheism here, to be honest, though I sometimes feel I should.

I sometimes attend church services, I admit, to pick up pointers from the preachers there. They have big churches for a reason: charisma and theatre are a part of religion, too, even though we don't like to talk about them.

3. Family -- Is there a point in your friendships with people where it is possible for someone to BECOME you family (short of marriage), or do you hold these things as two fundamentally seperate entities (via blood- and law-authority)?

Yes, there is a point where they become family. I have a number of people I consider family who aren't related to me in any way. Hell, I have a nephew and two nieces now, apparently (I'm "Uncle Mike" to them all) and I'm not related by blood or marriage to any of them, but I'd do anything for them.

Re: SORRY A BIT BEHIND THE TIMES....

1. If you were new to the Earth, and you had the whole world at your hands…what would be the first place you would want to travel to and why?

An amusement park or haunted house. I imagine those places would be the most interesting to see people interacting in.

2. Knowing what I know of you (which isn’t that much) how do you know that we aren’t just a scientific experiment on someone’s book shelf?

I don't. But I also don't think it matters. :)

3. What is your concept of family? How do you prepeatuate this concept?

Blood and heart. Family is the people you'd do anything for, whether because you have the same blood or because you keep them in your heart. Many people are family to me, really.

I try to perpetuate the concept by being there for them.

4. Being the gentleman that you are, I know you have many love interest… what would be the one gift you would give to all those whom you love?

Someone to love them how they want to be loved. That person is unlikely to be me, but it's what I want for them.

5. Oh ho…sex… what was your idea of sex when you were a wee teenage boy and how has it changed as you grew up? Was it esoteric? Was it a great dream? Did you actually know what sex was or did you only go by what you heard?

I knew what it was, in terms of process. It was mysterious, but not something I was hunting for. I think I probably had the idea that a relationship was doing well when sex finally got involved. Of course, sex doesn't solve issues, I can see now (more from other's experience than my own).

6. What is the one hobby that totally confounds you in other individuals?

Anything involving "collecting" where there is no trading or selling of what you have collected. The thing that bothers me most are people who collect Star Wars toys and never play with them. That is sacralidge to me.

7. Did you ever have those Mermen, you know those mermen that were to create a wondrous undersea environment?

Sea Monkeys? Hell yeah.

I imagine I killed billions of them.

8. How many levels of friendships do you have?

One, but that's because once you get into the category of "friend", there's nowhere else really to go. You can't get out of it, no matter how hard you try. And I like friends. They're good to have. But there are gray areas within that category, different shades.

9. Hmm Literature… if you could go back in time, what time period would you go back to for the books?

Just before the final burning of the Library of Alexandria.

10. Did you ever fall under the spell of the great epics?

No, I didn't. They don't do a lot for me, I'm afraid. I fall under other spells much more easily.

11. Did you think you would ever leave your home town?

My home town changes every time I move :)

12. In your honest opinion, what is the one physical trait that most humans would rather change?

The way they appear to themselves in the mirror. Whatever way that is, they dislike it.

13. Do you think it should be necessary for High Schoolers to become volunteers at some point in their HS career? And Why?

No, because then it isn't "volunteer" work.

14. What goals did you have as you were growing up, and what goals have you added as you got older?

I wanted to be a writer. Now, I'm not interested in that. Making a living as a writer seems a dishonest occupation to me. Today, I just live to laugh and laugh to live, and that's my main goal.

15. Where do you see the world and it’s beliefs, people, ect in the next 100 years?

Evolving, but not necessarily changing. :) The world will do what the world does. I rarely speculate on the future. They'll think we're backwards people living in times of progress, and we have no conception of what the world could possibly be like then. I just hope it's full of decent humans, like it is today.

1. Where is one place you'd like to go back to?

A dark night in a nematon, when I knew where I wanted to be forever.

2. What does religion mean to you?

"Re-binding". Yes, I'm using the derivation of the word as my definition, but I do that a lot. It's a thing we do when we are seperated from being religious: we get religious. And we all do it, in our own ways.

3. To you, what are the most important values a family can have?

Faith. Faith in each other, and in their gods.

4. How do you see love? (Not in the philosopical sense)

I look for it. That's how I see it :)

5. What does sex mean to you?

Little. I value things like closeness and love, which are associated with sex, much higher.

6. Why do you have the hobbies you have?

Because I enjoy them? I try and learn from them, which helps.

7. What is the strangest pet you could tolerate owning?

A mouse found wandering aimlessly through a Chicago airport.

8. What do you expect out of a friendship?

Nothing. It's freely given, and it doesn't need to be reciprocated.

9. What is your guilty pleasure literature?

Throw-away SciFi from the 1970's. Especially things regarding swashbucklers in space.

10. Pirate movies or ninja movies?

Pirate Ninja movies.

But ninjas are best. Always ninjas.

11. What is the best place to eat in your home town?

Hound Dog's Pizza: Pizza for the People.

12. What would you change?

Nothing. Aboslutely nothing.

13. What would you volunteer for?

Mostly only things that further my own goals. I am not, alas, an altruistic person.

14. Are you life goals the same as they were 5 years ago? Ten years ago?

No, but then with me, "goals" are things that I like to see change. It's silly, to me, to keep fighting to keep the same goals when sometimes they become obsolete.

15. Do you think we are headed towards another ice age at the rate we are going?

Not for some time. I mean, the last one was only 600 years ago. We'll warm up a bit more first, as is natural for after an ice age.
