|10:49 am - Vikings vs. Indians!|
Dude! Pathfinder (the movie about Vikings fighting Indians) has made it to the dollar theatre! I never saw it make it to the first run!
The synopsis is: "A Viking boy is left behind after his clan battles a Native American tribe. Raised within the tribe, he ultimately becomes their savior in a fight against the Norsemen."
Wow. I'm so there!
Oh, and on an unrelated note: zylch, remember those stockings I owe you? I think I've found a perfect match.
Current Location: Southeast of Disorder
Current Mood: amused
Current Music: "Landfall", -JB
Dude! That movie sounds awesome. (Plus, it has Karl Urban, who is very, very pretty.) Too bad it's not on video... we're having a grove movie night next week.
Awesome? Awesome is your icon!
I'm skeptical of the movie for a few reasons. It seems from the advertisements that they're going to portray the Norsemen as bloodthirsty killers without a purpose and the indigenous people as completely peaceful. It's a nice reflection of the plight of the modern Native American, but not close to historically accurate. Also, 300 kind of sucked, and I think it's the same person doing it.
I wonder if they'll even give a name for the natives...
Dude, you don't go to movies like *this* for intelligent commentary. This is Vikings versus Injuns! Indo-European Pale Patriarchal Penis People verses indigenous Matriarchal Peace-Loving Hippy Wannabes!
This has all the makings of the best movie ever
Except, perhaps, for the 1978 movie The Norsemen
, which was the pinnacle of the Viking vs. Indian motif. It starred Lee Majors and many Vikings (including the token black viking) with Texas accents! A rare gem indeed!
But then, I like
I expect to have fun watching it. I might even buy Junior Mints and popcorn (concessions are rare with me) to fully appreciate the gluttonous moviegoing experience that B movies entail. :)

Yeah, I think I saw that movie when it was called "Dances With Wolves".
And its antithesis when it what called "The 13th Warrior".
The thing is, people take "based on a historical event" as meaning "historically accurate". Like the Bible...

I cringe whenever I see any reference to the remake of Pathfinder. Do you remember the original, which I brought to a PSA movie night?http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093668/
I'm sure the remake is a different movie, and has its own merits, but don't forget the original affectionate retelling of an old Sami myth.
I do remember that one. I vaguely recall being bored out of my skull (no offense, of course). I think, though, that I was bored because I wasn't into reading movies at the time. I imagine it would be different now.

I can understand being kind of bored. Though suspenseful, Pathfinder isn't action-packed. I rather like that though. It quietly allows aspects of Sami traditional culture come through, which is what I really like about the film. Plus it has shamans! And reindeer! And is the first (only?) film in the Sami language.
But then I am admittedly biased in favor of movies containing shamans and reindeer ;-)
Honestly, if I can get this excited about Vikings vs. Injuns, I can fully understand someone getting excited about Shamans and Reindeer :)

Have you seen Kukushka (English title The Cuckoo)?? It was made in 2002. The three characters are Finnish, Russian, and Saami and they speak those languages, and there's a shamanic journey and a love triangle and everything. I loved it. If you haven't seen it, maybe we should rent it when you come down!
I got that from the public library recently. It was very good. I wish they still made movies like that these days.

Yay! Pathfinder is a good little movie. More people should see it!
And it's "Rated R for strong brutal violence throughout."
as a "B" movie...Injuns vs Norse... then yes...it ranks right up there with The NORSEMAN...with those flimsy axes in the water...giggle..
but on the serious front... I disliked it because of the way some people will take it...
"Oh so you are Viking? (shifting eyes)... Umm... you don't actually kill and maim people do you?"
grin...makes life hard in a proper christian state you know? Grin...
I must say that the battle scenes were good though, the cheesiness though wasn't as high as in THE NORSEMAN... grin...
Yeah, I need to watch that film when it comes out on DVD. I wasn't up to wasting the funds on it at full price.
But I love a good B movie...
and my wife figured she wouldn't mind watching Karl Urban wearing just a "mud flap" (as she calls it).
When are you going? Can I go with?
What she said -- I wanna go see this one too!
Hmm. . . You weren't free Sat. night, were you?
Sadly, no, since I'll have pre-Mother's day stuff going on. :(
Sunday night, perhaps? Still Mother's Day, but maybe it's late enough?
(I'm limited on times I can view a movie, now, I've discovered, since movie times tend to fall such that I'd be inside at sunset. . . Makes scheduling things interesting) :)
Totally! I haven't set a time/date. Maybe Saturday night?
Night or afternoon? (I forget how their matinées work on weekends...)

*winks* And to think, I owe them to you for what we did in front of all those people! We ought to be ashamed, or something.
