09:09 am - Transcription Project
Something I've always wanted to do but never really had the time for is to get all the omens from all our rites posted so that folk could see them, which would help with their DP writeups.

I think that, if I can find the time this weekend, I'd like to get on that, and start transcribing the Book of Three Cranes over onto a page on our site. I'm not sure if I'd just make the omens public, or if I'd make the writeups public, or if I'd just make the whole thing "members-only" on the site.

But I've realized that each Grove Dedicant needs this information, anyway (as does anyone doing the DP who might attend our rituals), so why not make it available? I get enough questions (usually about one per ritual) within a week of the rite to know that it's something we need.

Plus, given our history with losing sign-in books (and then subsequently finding them after we've changed to a new book), it wouldn't be a bad idea to actively keep another copy.

So, that's my weekend project. Well, aside from continuing to fill in the 1 ft. x 1 ft. hole in my house. And watching the Buckeyes with tesinth. And maybe getting a bit of sleep.

Heck, I haven't even had time to do my own Samhain rite yet. I'll be working off of last year's ritual, but I want to take the time to sit down and modify it, too.

1 ft. x 1 ft. hole?

Indeed. It's impressive what has happened: there used to be a window there, which was, at some point, broken out. Instead of replacing the window, the previous owners stuffed some insulation into it, and boarded it up with plywood.

This is in the days before treated plywood was sold. So they just painted it brown.

I'd never really noticed it because it's mostly under the deck, and I admit that I'd never been spelunking under the deck until just this week.

But last week, we started catching an average of 1.25 mice per day. I went looking for the hole they were coming in (it just started to get cold this week, so I am not surprised that they came in at this point).

Turns out that the plywood had rotted away something fierce, and fiberglass insulation doesn't keep mice out. I estimate there are at least three mice left in the house, which equals the number of mice who are legitimately in the house, but confined to cages.

So now I have to plug this hole that was left by the broken out window. The current solution is to dump concrete in there and hope that it remains standing. Currently, the concrete I put in is curing.

This "fix-it" job is par for the course in this house. Consider, for instance, how I know that the ugly wallpaper in the master bedroom was put up less than a year before I bought my house: they had stuffed a hole in the wall with newspaper instead of spackeling over it. The date on the paper was enough to inform me when the "improvement" took place.

Of course, the bloody, child-sized handprint I found in my hallway after ripping down the wallpaper also raised an eyebrow. . .

I suspect we'll use that on the cracks around the edges. But the central issue is doing something lasting. Seems that most of the spray foam really only has a life-span of 2 years or so.

Besides, concrete is $3 for 40 lbs. . . The spray foam is about that for a bottle, and I don't have any idea how many bottles total I'd need to fill up the entire space. The hole in the window is only 1x1, but I'm sealing the entire window up, so it's more like 1.5 x 2.5 ft (the window goes into the back of a cupboard in the basement, so I'm not losing any light, and if I replace it with another window, it would be a window into the cupboard). :)

tesinth knows more about it than I do, but my impression is that there's a definite lifespan to it. It may be different for the stuff applied by contractors on a large scale, though.

Its exposure to the elements that is really they key. While that window won't be exposed to most direct sunlight or rain, it certainly will degrade over time, not to mention that it can be easily chewed threw by little furry creatures. For a temporary fix, the stuffs great, but long-term requires a bit more work.

Oh well, back to work...

Not sure I'd count that quite as "child-sized." Consider the size of your hands compared to mine, for instance -- looks more like a typical small woman's hand print, like mine.

Hm.... now I can't remember if I ever dismembered anyone/thing at your house... good thing you don't have a copy of my fingerprints. *bwahahah*

I would love to read the stuff...I will unlikely ever get to attend a ritual for a number of reasons but I do like reading.
