04:20 pm - Necromancy
Many of you know by now that Diablo III is coming out. Which means (of course) that I'll have to buy a new computer in order to run the damn thing.

But there's been a lot of talk about what's happening to various character classes. There's speculation that the Witch Doctor class has replaced the Necromancer (and speculation that this speculation is all bunk, of course). The Necromancer is, by far, my favourite character class in Diablo 2.

Anyway, to avoid writing an entire entry about a game that was announced less than a week ago, I'm going to just say what the point of this little post was about, anyway:

I'm thinking about writing an article on necromancy for the Samhain issue of Oak Leaves. I think it would fit nifty-like there.

Besides, I haven't been able to get anything into OL for a very long time. I feel somewhat guilty about that, actually.

Totally excited for Diablo 3.

One of our writers put together a really good summary of what is known right now: http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/53395

*nods* All good stuff. I'm particularly fond of the care they've put into the Necro's backstory, in general. Just from reading the manuals (never picked up a book on it), it's clear they're well developed.

Here's hopin' for a return, at least in the expansion(s) . . .

Yeah, they're not the most effective strategy, even if they do look awesome :)

The new patch lets you play without the CD in the drive, which is pretty cool, actually.

I'm all for ideas, by all means have lots of them. Have them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Decorate your home with them. Take them on picnics. Bury yourself up to your neck in them. Find a sweaty partner and have fun wrestling around in them. Ideas are GOOD.

Mostly. (remembering MJD's basement Clthulu working...)

Just read MJD's Clthulu Working - my mind will be chewing on that for awhile....

One question keeps popping into my head though - what did you do with the flogger?

It's hanging up over my workbench. I don't (personally) have a lot of use for such a thing, though it was interesting trying to learn how to make one.

I generally only bother with such a thing for workings that "require" (though the quotes are very apt: nothing requires a flogger, but some texts say they're helpful, so I'm all into testing out theories) one. Besides, it's well known I'll try just about anything once.

It is actually not soft leather; this one was designed to hurt, I'm afraid, rather than bring out that sort of pleasureful pain that doesn't leave marks.

Experimenting with a variety of methods of mind-alteration led to the creation of the flogger. So I have used it. I just don't use it anymore.

I *could* make one that had soft leather. It wasn't hard, after all, to make this one.

I was actually planning on looking at the source material and discussing necromancy from an ancient context.

As for encouragement, well, I don't encourage anyone to do anything. I just do what I do and hope people are smart enough to point and laugh, rather than emulate :)

I think that those who work in a Gaulish-oriented practice would be more likely to be interested in necromancy, myself. I don't know why I think that, but I really do.

When you think of necromancy, do you think of anything involving the dead, or just divination involving the dead as "counting" as necromancy?
